San Diego Unified Schools Embrace Non-Traditional Schedules: A Student-Centric Approach (2025)

Three More SD Unified High Schools Embrace Non-Traditional Schedule

Mira Mesa, Madison, and Canyon Hills High Schools will join 13 others in the district by adopting a four-by-four model, moving away from the traditional six-period schedule. This decision, made by the District Board of Education, aims to enhance the educational experience for students.

The four-by-four model extends class periods to 90-110 minutes, allowing for more comprehensive coverage of subjects. This approach has shown positive results in other districts, maintaining or even improving Advanced Placement pass rates and student grades.

A few years ago, the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts made the switch and witnessed benefits. Students like Chloe Fernandez and Elizabeth Lee shared their positive experiences, highlighting reduced stress and improved time management.

However, concerns arise regarding the availability of courses and teachers' capabilities. Lili Fuller, an English and AVID teacher at Madison High School, expressed mixed feelings, questioning the mandate for all schools and the implementation process.

The transition is set to begin next fall, with the remaining schools having the option to decide on the four-by-four model by the 2028-29 school year. This decision reflects the district's commitment to exploring innovative educational approaches while addressing potential challenges.
